Important COVID-19 Update

The Bakersfield Youth Symphony Board of Directors met by zoom on Monday, 8/3/2020.  We have taken into consideration both the governor’s recent closings and the vast majority of schools in the county deciding to start the school year virtually.  Their guidance makes it abundantly clear that virtual programming is, indeed, the safest option for our students this fall.  Although we understand this is not the ideal situation for any music ensemble, it is important to us to keep the youth orchestra alive and begin to rebuild the momentum we lost last spring. We strongly encourage you to submit an application and join us again this year--Maestro Eshkenazy and the Board will do everything we can to make it an educational, and worthwhile experience for the students as we prepare for the return of live performances.  Here are the changes we have made:

  • The board has decided to move auditions to Saturday, October 24, 2020.  Students that have applied and paid the $25 application fee by October 3rd will be given instructions on how to record their audition scales and music on YouTube and send it in for judging.  There will be no sight reading or blind auditions this year.

  • Once students have made the BYSO they will pick up their music folders and pay the $175 (reduced amount) membership fee.  We will begin zoom rehearsals in November through the beginning of December with Maestro Maxim Eshkenazy every Monday evening from 6-8:30 PM.  There will also be breakout sectionals.

  • We are hoping in January to return to safe in person rehearsals.  We will then proceed with our scheduled concerts in March and June.

We are looking forward to a challenging and productive BYSO 2020-2021 season!
