The mallet excerpt is for percussionists only.

Fulfill the following requirements:

For consideration as a member of the Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra, you must fulfill the following:

Completion of the application Google form accompanied by $25 non-refundable application fee no later than August 29, 2025.
Performance of audition music including:
1. The assigned scale(s) AND excerpts for your instrument provided.
2. There will be instrument specific sight-reading excerpts.
Membership in the BYSO is open to students in the 7th grade through 19 years of age at the time of auditions, unless exceptions have been approved by the BYSO Board. Students must be enrolled in their school instrumental ensemble where available.
You must be enrolled and in good standing in your school instrumental music group where available.
Attendance at all rehearsals and concerts is mandatory if you become a member of the BYSO.
Rehearsals will be on Sundays at CSUB from 5:30-8:00 PM, unless there is a 3-day weekend.
Review the 2025-2026 Calendar to make sure you are available to attend all rehearsals and concerts.

Complete the following Google form and pay the application fee via the PayPal link following submission of the form.

*Payment of the $25 application fee will apply to the tuition fee of $275, payable upon admission to the Bakersfield Youth Symphony. If you are not accepted, your $25 will NOT be refunded, and if you do not appear, the fee will be forfeited. Applications received later than August 30th will require a $10 late fee. Complete payment of tuition, in the form of cash or check, must be received by the first rehearsal. Financial aid to cover tuition is available based on need. Applications for financial aid are available.

*Application fee will be paid via PayPal, but tuition fees, if accepted, MUST be paid via cash or check.

The Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra is an audition-only ensemble. Below you will find a link to instrument-specific audition material and relevant forms needed for auditioning. Please refrain from using KHSD or PBVUSD emails for accessing the Google Drive as we have had problems with access in the past.
